What is Alkaline Water, and is it Better for My Health?

People often ask me what is alkaline water and is it better for my health? It’s actually a more complicated answer than you would think. The problem is many people use alkaline water and ionized water interchangeably.

The truth is they are very different from each other. Ionized drinking water is always alkaline but alkaline water is usually not ionized. Let us explain further the different types of alkaline water and how ionized water is different.

How to Make Alkaline Water

There are many ways to make alkaline water. The most common way for water to become alkaline is for alkaline minerals to dissolve into it. These minerals are usually calcium and magnesium.

How To Make Alkaline Water

Most of the Southern United States has naturally alkaline water coming out of the tap. They get their water from large underground aquifers that are surrounded by rock. As the water sits for long periods of time in these aquifers, it dissolves the minerals out of the rock and makes alkaline water.

Drinking this alkaline water is not better for your health. Unless your body is deficient in calcium or magnesium then drinking more of these minerals in your water isn’t going to make a difference. Some websites claim that alkaline water is a miracle cure. They say it can cure cancer and help with diabetes and high blood pressure. None of this is true!

Another way to make water alkaline is to use baking soda. Again, while the water may be alkaline, drinking this water will not make you any healthier. Plus, it will taste really sour.

Changing Water’s Chemical Structure with Water Electrolysis

The third way to make water alkaline is to change its chemical structure. The only way that this can be accomplished is by exposing water to an energy source. When water runs along a stream or bubbles up through a spring, it can capture kinetic energy. The ions from this energy will interact with the hydrogen.  This will change the chemical structure of water to alkaline.

Changing Water's Chemical Structure with Water Electrolysis

The technical term for this is water electrolysis. Water electrolysis also happens when water is energized by the sun. This is the most common way. Imagine a glacial stream running along an ice bed where the ice magnifies all the sun’s rays into the water. Tests on this type of glacial water show that it is very alkaline.  It is also full of antioxidants. More on that in a second.

Stagnant Water is Not Good to Drink

If you don’t live next to a pristine natural spring or a glacial stream, then the water you drink will not be chemically alkaline.  It also will not have any antioxidants in it.

Water that is pumped out of aquifers has been sitting for long periods of time. This causes the water to become stagnant or flat.  It will lose any of the ions that it captured from water electrolysis.

Even when water is pumped out of a natural spring for residential use, it first makes a pit stop at a municipal water treatment facility. These facilities store water in giant tanks or pools and the water becomes flat.

Any ions that this water once had from bubbling around in a spring are lost. This also means that municipally treated water won’t have any antioxidants.

Water Ionization: An Amazing Discovery

About 50 years ago and amazing invention was discovered by the Russians. They were doing agricultural studies.  They discovered that acidic water placed on plants kept bugs away.  They didn’t have to use pesticides!  The Russians started making machines that could split water with water electrolysis.  This created both alkaline and acidic water.

Water Ionization: An Amazing Discovery

The Russians used the acidic water on the plants but then disposed of the alkaline water. It wasn’t until Japanese businessmen who visited Russia asked questions about the alkaline water.  Tests were done on the electrolyzed alkaline water and it had antioxidants in it!

The tests also revealed that this ionized alkaline water was very similar to the quality of water in the Fountain of Youth in Lourdes, France.  It had a 9.5 pH and just as many antioxidants.

It also matched the quality of water from other pristine springs and glacial streams around the world. In China, these springs are called longevity springs.  People who drink this ionized alkaline water from longevity spring live long and healthy lives.

The Birth of the Alkaline Water Ionizer Machine

The Japanese businessmen took this primitive alkaline water machine back to Japan.  They added a filtration system. This created the first residential alkaline water ionizer. It filtered the water and then used water electrolysis to make the water alkaline and create antioxidants.

The Birth of the Alkaline Water Ionizer Machine

Fast forward 50 years and water ionizer technology has vastly improved. The first water ionizers were countertop alkaline water filters. They used two plates with a membrane in between them. Now modern water ionizers use seven, nine and even eleven plates to electrolyze your water.

The filtration systems in modern water ionizers have also greatly improved. The very first alkaline water ionizer machines used a single carbon filter. Modern water ionizers use multi-stage filtration systems.

These system include stages of carbon, activated carbon, ceramic, anti-fungal felt, ion exchange resin and more.  Combining these stages removes all the difficult contaminants from your drinking water.

Upgrades to Alkaline Water Machines

In recent years, innovative water ionizer companies have also improved the electrical systems. The older water ionizers ran on transformers. These transformers produced a lot of heat and wasted electricity. This heat also damaged the components inside the water ionizer over time. Transformers and water ionizers were not a good mix.

Upgrades to Alkaline Water Machines

About 15 years ago, the first alkaline water ionizers came out using a switched mode power supply. These SMPS electrical systems ran much cooler which greatly improved the longevity of the water ionizer. They also produced a cleaner electrical current, which achieved better ionization. This created more antioxidants in the drinking water!

Another modern innovation to water ionizers is that they now can be mounted underneath your sink. These under sink alkaline water ionizer machines have all the functionality of their counter-top counterparts.  However,  only their faucet sits above your counter! This faucet has all the controls built into it so you can select multiple alkaline and acidic water levels.  All with just the touch of a button.

The filters and plates of undersink alkaline water machines go underneath your sink and out of sight. These undersink water ionizers also have stainless steel faucets.  They are built to last for many years.

The Importance of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are important because they lower the oxidative stress levels in your body’s cells.  Oxidative stress has been linked to cancer and virtually every other disease. That’s because oxidative stress breaks down your cells and makes them weaker.  This diminishes your body and its capacity to be healthy.

The Importance of Antioxidants

The antioxidants in alkaline ionized water are like scavengers.  They search out and find the free radicals that are responsible for the oxidative stress in your cells and then neutralize those free radicals by lending them an ion.

Remember when we said before that the best water is created by exposing water to an energy source?  That energy source creates the extra ions in ionized water.  Those ions are a powerful antioxidant for your body.

People who drink ionized water report immediate health benefits.  As the cells in your body get healthier, your energy level will go up.  You’ll also find that it is easier to sleep at night.  A detoxified body is also better at digesting food. Your body will also receive more nutrients from the food that it eats.

You’ll also find it easier and more satisfying to exercise when drinking ionized water.  You’ll have extra energy and your body will feel better.  You will enjoy walking, running, biking and sports more than you used to!

Acidic ionized water also has cosmetic uses and benefits.  When you create acidic ionized water with your water ionizer, you can use it on your skin as a natural astringent.  This will clean your skin and tone it without having to use chemicals!  You can also use acidic ionized water on your houseplants, garden, and to sterilize your home.

Drinking alkaline water alone does not make you healthier. If you are drinking alkaline water because of minerals or baking soda, this will not improve your health. But if you are drinking alkaline water from an alkaline water ionizer, you will be healthier!

Alkaline water ionizer machines make water chemically alkaline.  They use water electrolysis to do this. They make alkaline water that is full of antioxidants. These antioxidants help your body to detoxify. This means that drinking alkaline ionized water will make your body healthier!

A glass of alkaline ionized water from an alkaline water machine has more antioxidants than a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice!  That’s why alkaline ionized water is so healthy to drink.  You will greatly improve your health and the health of your family.   Get a water ionizer for your home. It creates the best water you can drink!
